Although it's a bit short on hits and killer songs compared to its companion volume (Sing "Baby Don't Do It"), this "5" Royales CD has its share of key tracks, including "So God Can Use Me," a holdover from their years (and Johnny Tanner's career) in gospel music, and their very first hit, "You Know I Know," as well as two cuts -- "I Wanna Thank You" and "With All Your Heart" -- that anticipated the sound of James Brown & His Famous Flames by a year or more. The unreleased tracks on this disc aren't quite as intriguing as those on the earlier Relic volume, but the audio quality is at least as good, and will constitute a minor revelation in itself for sharpness and clarity. On its own, this disc is a footnote, but paired up with the other Relic release, it's a third of a definitive look at a legendary R&B outfit in its early prime. ~
